A young woman, an old woman, the story of a lifetime.
When Iola Anne Poole, an old-timer on Hatteras Island, passes away in her bed at ninety-one, the struggling young mother in her rental cottage, Tandi Jo Reese, finds herself charged with the task of cleaning out Iola's rambling Victorian house.
Running from a messy, dangerous past, Tandi never expects to find more than a temporary hiding place within Iola's walls, but everything changes with the discovery of eighty-one carefully decorated prayer boxes, one for each year, spanning from Iola's youth to her last days. Hidden in the boxes is the story of a lifetime, written on random bits of paper--the hopes and wishes, fears and thoughts of an unassuming but complex woman passing through the seasons of an extraordinary, unsung life filled with journeys of faith, observations on love, and one final lesson that could change everything.

THE UNOFFICIAL BIO: A special first grade teacher, Mrs. Krackhardt, made a writer out of me. That may sound unlikely, but it's true. It's possible to find a calling when you're still in pigtails and Mary Jane shoes, and to know it's your calling. I was halfway through the first grade when I landed in Mrs. Krackhardt's classroom. I was fairly convinced there wasn't anything all that special about me... and then, Mrs. Krackhardt stood over my desk and read a story I was writing. She said things like, "This is a great story! I wonder what happens next?"
It isn't every day a shy new kid gets that kind of attention. I rushed to finish the story, and when I wrote the last word, the teacher took the pages, straightened them on the desk, looked at me over the top, and said, "You are a wonderful writer!"
A dream was born. Over the years, other dreams bloomed and died tragic, untimely deaths. I planned to become an Olympic gymnast or win the National Finals Rodeo, but there was this matter of back flips on the balance beam and these parents who stubbornly refused to buy me a pony. Yet the writer dream remained. I always believed I could do it because... well... my first grade teacher told me so, and first grade teachers don't lie.
So, that is my story, and if you are a teacher, or know a teacher, or ever loved a special teacher, I salute you from afar and wish you days be filled with stories worth telling and stories worth reading.
I have to say I don't think Lisa could ever write a bad book. She is a extraordinary author.
I so enjoyed The prayer Box, it was fabulously written so much so I could not put it down. I fell in love with Tandi Jo and the whole idea of prayer boxes was so much fun.
Have you ever thought about having a prayer box? This book is sure to change your mind if you said no.
I gave this book 5 stars and I wish that I could give it more.

ReplyDeleteGreat Review.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the wonderful review, Mary. To say you would give it more than 5 stars really says something. Of course, I like the title "The Prayer Box" and being a Sister, it is really "up my alley" as they say. I would so love to win this book. I started a prayer box a long time ago but gave it up - in it I put all my anxieties and problems. It was my God box and I'd write the problem on the paper and give it to God. This brings back those fond memories. I only wish I had kept it up. I'd so love to read this! Please enter me! Thanks. Mary Lou K flowersmarylou85@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteGreat Review,Thanks for sharing.I definately want to read this book.
ReplyDeleteThere is something in Yiddish called a pushke where you put your extra $ in for charity...its also called a tzdeke (?) in Hebrew. When I think of A Prayer Box, I think of something similar. The novel sounds enchanting.
ReplyDeleteI call my prayer box my God Box. When I sobered up 15 years ago (7/30/1998) my sponsor told me to make one and when I felt like hope was almost gone to write to God and he would work on my problem. Apparently it works because next Tuesday I will get my 15 year chip. (smile)
ReplyDeleteCongrats Pamela, That is wonderful, What a mighty God we serve!
DeletePamela, you made me tear up! Isn't God a great God? Congrats to you!
DeleteBlessings!
