Cupid on the Loose by John Jacobson

From the author of All the Cowboys Ain’t Gone and California Fever comes a romantic comedy about the exuberant intoxication of amore and its often hilarious antics.

Aspiring author Billy Spiers tends to fall passionately in love, but soon, finding something missing, fall quickly out again. His grandmother, who raised him, thinks he needs to settle down and find a mate. When Billy’s on the verge of ending yet another relationship, his grandmother decides to do some well-intentioned meddling.

Kari Porter is not only smart and beautiful but also a writer with passions and sensibilities similar to Billy’s. She loves the same kind of stories, quotes lines from his favorite old poems and songs, and has a unique take on Shakespeare—is this the kindred spirit he’s been longing for? Sparks fly, and soon the two are lingering over dinner and taking romantic sunset bike rides along the California coast. They even manage to matchmake their four closest friends.

But artistic types can be hypersensitive. As their relationship rapidly progresses, they become afraid of moving too fast—and of getting hurt. Kari becomes distant, dealing with a crisis she feels she can’t share with Billy, while Billy responds with crazy drastic action that he thinks might salvage the relationship. Billy’s grandmother can’t help meddling again, sending all three couples to a magical mountain lodge where she and her husband fell madly in love decades before. Mayhem ensues when the enigmatic and impish proprietor of the lodge introduces passion-fueled havoc, pushing the young lovers—inadvertently—in the wrong direction.

A twenty-first century twist on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s DreamCupid on the Loose is a delightful romp that takes an entertaining and humorous look at the foibles of infatuation, lust, and romantic love.

He was born in Nevada, grew up in the West, surfed big waves in Hawaii, circled the world thrice, survived the sixties and seventies, corporate America, and grad school. After crossing paths with the elf queen Argent, Isaac is sent to a strange magical school for wayward practitioners in the hopes that he can learn where he--and his unusual talent--fit in the world. Isaac is charmed by the school's chaotic nature, and finds himself unexpectedly drawn to Vran, a Sea Elf haunted by secret knowledge.

Chicago surgeon Emily Hartford has never quite shaken off the dust of her hometown in Michigan. She may be a professional success and have a princely boyfriend in the Windy City, but she can't seem to let go of being "the coroner's daughter" from Freeport.

Once again, she finds herself pulled back upstate during a wintery late March when Jeremiah--the eleven year-old son of her best friend, Jo--goes missing on the frigid shores of Lake Michigan.

To everyone's relief, Jeremiah turns up days later, alive and unharmed. But tensions remain high, and suspicions of every sort continue to grow. Jeremiah's account of his abduction doesn't add up and Emily worries about Jo's unraveling marriage. Jeremiah's recovery, it turns out, is not the end of their terrifying tale. It's just the beginning ...

For moving among them is a devious, malevolent force. Sowing panic while seeking to fulfill his own twisted needs, this wolf in sheep's clothing leaves a trail of rack and ruin, heedless of the damages in his wake ... and the bodies he leaves behind.

My Thoughts...
You don't want to miss this fourth book in this series The Coroner's Daughter. A fun mystery. It is the fourth book in the series, but it reads as a standalone. I am going back and reading the first 3 now, very well written.

Lisa was born in New Jersey two miles from where Thomas Alva Edison first recorded sound; in fact she and her adolescent peers would often be found lounging beneath the art deco tower that was built in his honor, making-out or puffing on stolen cigarettes. Just as Lisa was getting comfortable wearing bold-colored maxi skirts, her parents moved her and her two brothers to California, where she quickly adapted to making out and smoking cigarettes on the beach instead.

She went to college and studied biology and theater arts. She went to graduate school and studied environmental anthropology. After years of writing copy for non-profits, selling surplus cosmetics in Russia, and living off rich married men, she accepted an editorial position at that little-known Open Office competitor, Microsoft. There she created MATTER, the company's first online magazine read by the 34 people who were patient enough to wait the twelve minutes it took the GIFs to download through their 56K modems.

She got married. Left Microsoft. Went to Africa. Moved back to California. Wrote a book of interconnected short stories about a girl looking for true love--OTHER FISH IN THE SEA. Found an agent who sold it for shitloads of money. Had a baby. Wrote another novel about a ménage a trois gone bad--HAT TRICK. Wrote another one after that about WWII--not yet published. Then she moved to Bali to save her wounded marriage, and wrote a memoir about her time there. It's called RASH, and it's a funny poignant tale about a woman who mistakenly believes that running away to paradise is the only way to find true happiness.

Her latest book, a sexy psychological thriller called THE WIDOW ON DWYER COURT will be released Summer 2024 by Blackstone Publishing.

Happy Harbor by Rachel Hanna

Josie Campbell has spent her entire adult life distancing herself from her childhood in the small Southern town of Happy Harbor. Growing up with an alcoholic mother who was either absent or scandalizing the town with her antics, all Josie ever wanted was to escape to somewhere no one knew her as Diane's daughter. Now, she finally has it all--a great job, a condo in one of Atlanta's most desirable areas, a successful fiancé, and her teenage daughter, Kendra, enrolled at a top-rated school.

But when that life falls apart, and her beloved nana dies, Josie is forced to return to the one place she never wanted to visit again. Soon, she finds herself stepping into Nana's shoes in Happy Harbor: running her quaint restaurant, living in their family's historic home, and bumping into Walker Jackson--the disturbingly handsome man who lives in the guest house--on a near daily basis. All of which sounds idyllic, if it weren't for the painful memories lurking around every corner. Still, the place seems to be good for Kendra, who begs to stay, and Josie is inclined to at least make an attempt at a new life in this old town.

That is, until her mother turns up. Diane insists she's truly sober now and wants just one more chance. Nana's last wish was for the two of them to reconcile, and she's even arranged things to help make that happen. But with a lifetime of painful experiences that have taught her not to trust this woman, can Josie truly bring herself to forgive Diane?

A Comedy of Nobodies by Baron Ryan

Charlie knows he's not the main character in his own story. He's just one more schmuck trying to navigate life in the Ivy League. He plays in a terrible jazz band, falls in love far too easily, and generally struggles with the business of being human.

With understated hilarity this collection chronicles Charlie and his friends as they explore the meaning of life through the stories they grew up with, the stories they tell each other, and the stories they tell themselves.

As Charlie tries to find love using the scientific method, babysits a toddler in exchange for a chance to loosen those financial aid purse-strings, jumps out a window to escape a jealous football player's wrath, and enrages a packed hockey stadium by replacing the national anthem with a jazz-trio rendition of "American Pie," he discovers that the answers to life's most pressing questions are almost always just more questions.

Written in a wry, comedic style that favors sagacity over gags and perceptiveness over punchlines, A Comedy of Nobodies: A Collection of Stories traces one fall semester in the lives of four typical but unforgettable millennials who just want to understand each other's suffering, in order to feel more understood. Now if only Charlie could break in those new shoes ...

A Friend Indeed by Elka Ray

So, when Jo gets a frantic late-night call from Dana, sobbing and desperate for help, it feels like a chance to help her friend in return.

Dana admits to killing her husband following years of secret abuse and begs Jo not to call the police. For nearly two decades, Dana’s marriage and family had looked picture perfect. Who’d ever believe that pillar-of-the-community Stan was a monster? Determined to cover up her husband’s killing and shield her kids from scandal, Dana convinces Jo to help her dispose of the body.

But the cover-up starts to crumble when a blackmailer threatens to expose their crime. Hounded by gossipy neighbors, ill-fated lovers, and zealous cops, truth and lies are laid bare between Jo and Dana, putting their families in danger and threatening to shatter a thirty-year friendship. The Royal Game by Linda Keir

American pop singer Jennie Jensen is ready to marry the love of her life, England's Prince Hugh, but someone is determined to keep her from becoming a princess--any way they can. To give her fairy tale a happy ending, she'll have to play the royal game.

Jennie Jensen is touring Europe, already living her dream, when Prince Hugh of Wales--the future King of England--appears at a gig and requests his favorite song. He's already smitten and soon, so is she. After a secretive, whirlwind romance, Hugh proposes, and when Jennie accepts, her world changes overnight. She's still learning to navigate the minefield of constant scrutiny, barbed social interactions, and royal protocol (there are rules about pantyhose), as she learns that not everyone in England is excited about the prospect of an American princess.

When Jennie receives a threatening note, she can't help but see the parallels between herself and another young woman who struggled to adjust to royal life: Hugh's mother, Princess Penelope, who was killed in a mysterious plane crash. And as the threats to Jennie grow more serious, she digs into Penelope's past, discovering a woman who also suspected someone in the palace was out to get her. Was Penelope murdered? And is Jennie next? With the eyes of a nation on her as the royal wedding approaches, she's in a race against time to save her marriage ... and her own life.

Both a charming love story and a thrilling mystery, The Royal Game reveals one woman's determination to find happily ever after--on her own terms.
