Baptism in the name of Jesus, or Baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost?

Baptism in the name of Jesus, or baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost?

I recently had a conversation about baptism with a friend. The conversation got me to thinking. The question was posed what is the right way to be baptized. And I want to get my blog readers opinions. Some believe it should be in the Name of the Father, the son, and the Holy Ghost. Others believe it should be in the name of Jesus for remission of sins. So I want you blog readers to tell the way you believe you should be baptized. In Mark in the 16th chapter the scripture says” And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned”. The following is a brief explanation of both.

Jesus Name Baptism
The belief of the Christians that baptize in the Name of Jesus use several scriptures to support their argument. In Acts 2 Peter is preaching to people after he is filled with the Holy Spirit. Peter explained who Jesus was. He also preached Jesus crucified and risen from the dead. That brings us to verse 37 that reads as follows.

Acts 2:37-38
37) Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The men felt remorse and asked Peter what they should do. That is when Peter told them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins.  In the book of Acts whenever baptism is mentioned it is in the name of the Jesus.  There are several more scriptures in Acts that speaks about Jesus name baptism.

Acts 8:16
16) For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 10:48
48) And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Acts 19:5
5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus

Acts 22:16
16)And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Outside of scripture the Encyclopedia Britannia in the 11th Edit., Vol. 3, pages. 365-366 it states that the baptismal formula was changed from the name of Jesus Christ to the words Father, Son & Holy Ghost by the Catholic Church in the Second Century. Also in the Catholic encyclopedia in Vol. 2, pg. 263 states that the way of baptism was changed by the Catholic church.

Baptism in the name of the Father the Son and Holy Ghost.

To Baptize by saying I baptize you in the name of the Father The son and Holy Ghost comes from the Bible Verse…

Matthew 28:19
19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

When someone who is baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are believed to have become fully identified with the Trinitarian God. Hence, at the point of baptism one enters a special relationship with the divine Godhead. One does not enjoy this relationship before baptism. “The” precedes each of the Holy Three. It is “the Father,” “the Son,” and “the Holy Spirit.” The repetitious use of the article indicates that three distinct Persons.

Water baptism is a reminder of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Savior, not compulsory or has no salvation qualities. It is important to explain to the person potentially being baptized that they are already saved, if indeed they have confessed Jesus as Savior.

This is simply your opinion. Please do not fuss and argue and please respect other people’s beliefs.

  1. Jesus said to baptize people in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The three are One as it is recited in Hebrew "Hear Oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One" The "One" being a compound unity in the Hebrew language.

    1. What's the name of the "ONE"? It says baptize in the name. Singular.

  2. This is a very good post, I pray that it gets many people thinking and reading their Bible.

  3. Matthew 28:19 Says in the name and singular is correct. If the scripture was stating three names it would read in the name of the father and in the name of the son and name of the holy ghost. But that is not how it reads. It reads in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Also Jesus said in John 5:43 I am come in my Father's name and then in John 14:26 when Jesus was talking about the holy ghost he said "whom the Father will send in my name" Therefore When Peter said be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins he was fulfilling Matthew 28:19

  5. Matthew 28:19King James Version (KJV)

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
This is how we baptize at our church.

  6. Hmmmmm......this is a great post! I was baptized in the name(singular) of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I was raised to believe that the three are of one accord, so therefore, I believe that if you are baptized, you are baptized in ONE accord of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. However, is not JESUS the SON of God the FATHER and is He not the HOLY SPIRIT? So, could we not be baptized in Jesus' name and still be baptized in the trinitarian formula? That is my question.

    1. I was taught that you have to put Matthew 28:19 into proper perspective. First there isn't anyone being baptized in that scripture therefore it is a commandment or instruction Jesus is giving the disciples. The second is looking at the instruction that is given. Jesus said baptize in the name. For example, If you and I were sitting talking and having a wonderful conversation about books and I said to you Molly would you bring me a glass of water. And then you said back to me Molly will you bring me a glass of water. You didn't do anything you just repeated what I said. The same can be said when baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. You didn't follow the instruction you are just repeating the words that Jesus said.

  7. This is a good one, I don't know which one is right and which one is not. The Bible has both so I am really unsure about this, It has me wondering and thinking. I really need to pray and read more about the two. It would help to get more about both. Does Jesus say which one in red in the Bible?

  8. Similar to Molly, I think they are the same. Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit are one, so I feel that by baptizing in the name is Jesus, you are also baptizing in the name of God and the Holy Spirit. Good thought provoking question!

  9. If the Bible talks about them both how do we know which one is wrong and which one is right?

  10. Having been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I'm satisfied that it was adequate and fine. I think that to be baptized in the name of Jesus would be fine too. I understand the question is a valid one...but I honestly don't think that God (each member of the Trinity) is not going to consider anyone's baptism invalid due to which words were said. Since both are mentioned in the Bible, I think either is fine. If one's heart is sincere, and they have repented (turned from their sins), and live the rest of their lives following Jesus (even when what He said goes against what the world says and against what they want to do in the opposite direction) then they're fine either way. That's just my opinion.

  11. I think that the phrase "in the name of" carries the implication of authority given by the one named. So, if we are baptized in the name of the Jesus it would actually mean we are being baptized in the authority of Jesus. If we are baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit then we are baptized in the authority of the god head. Ultimately, they are one. They don't contradict each other. It's the same authority they share as one. The name is not the important part, the authority is. If you are baptized in the authority of the one true God (the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) then whether you do it in the name/authority of Jesus or the Father, the Son and The Holy Spirit you are doing it right. His authority is what counts.

  12. Interesting post, Mary. I was raised with the belief that baptism is the outward sign of an inward work. I was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I think it is a personal thing not a have to. God is so personal with us that I believe He guides that decision. I’ve never heard of being baptized in Jesus.

  15. This is a great post with a great question that is definitely makes me think about my answer. I'm not really sure what the correct answer is, but I agree a lot with what Molly shared.

  16. Thank you for inviting me to read this post.
It would take me a week to put together all the sources to help all understand this topic, but I'll make it small enough to help you do your own indepth study.
About me, I am bias on this as I have little respect for the Catholic church.
1st thing is we must understand that all this means nothing if it ignores Jesus Christ as the "eye of the needle" to enter the Kingdom.
2nd, one need to be aware of why they're being baptized. Which means babies don't benefit from this.
3rd, Go into the world and share the Gospel has a very important thing to it, it's about knowing who Jesus is and then accepting Him as your Lord and Savior. There are many things related to this that it would take many Sundays to teach.
4th, Holy Ghost -Angels and demons... Angels have been restricted since the flood from interacting with us, but demon, who are also angels, could care less about that command by God. JC said that an angel will be assigned to you when you accpet JC into your life. This is the only way to protect you from UFO harassment... Go to ce4research to learn more about this. Book- "Alien Interview" can also be very educational.
5th, The Bible has a corrupt history that caused my bias against the Catholic church much the same as the Reformer has like Cavin. Matthew 28:19 has been tainted by the early leaders around the time the Bible was printable and affordable by the household which is about the time the Chatholic church became established (by whom is an entirely different course).

    Franklin Graham posted this today...
“Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

It's important in whose name this is being done in…
    Acts 3:12-19
Peter rebukes them for crucifying Jesus Christ
“12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”

Here's a source to rebuke the trinity formula…

  17. Only 2 types of water baptism performed in the Bible,

    Johns baptism, unto repentance.

And the apostles baptism, in Jesus name.

    That's it !
No other baptism was actually performed.

And it's so important that disciples in acts 19 was rebaptized into Jesus Name !

3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

    And,
They received the Holy Ghost !

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Just like commanded in acts 2:38,
Repent, be baptized, and ye shall receive !

Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

  18. The Bible says "in the name of the Father, Son, & Holy Ghost". Jesus was baptized by John the Batist so it would make no sense to say "in the name of Jesus"
